I’m over my first post jitters, and now, I’m going to start as I mean to go on. Bringing you the weird and whacky stuff I find on my forays on the net.
Today’s question is…what do women want? And more specifically, what do women readers of Erotica want? My desire to ask this question hasn’t appeared out of nowhere. Nope, if you check out this article by Alfred MacDonald over on ThoughtCatalog, titled: Here’s Every Gory Detail You’ve Ever Wanted To Know About Anal Sex, you’ll start to understand what I’m asking. Especially combined with another article which was published last week over on Cosmopolitan.com. One of their editors decided to have a bit of a go at Erotica tropes. (Amy Odell’s article can be found here.) Now, everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, but I have to ask, how much realism do you guys want in a book?
You have one article describing, graphically, the actual act of anal sex which occurs frequently in the Erotica genre. But if you read it, you’ll see why writers can’t be graphic! God, would anyone get turned on if you read about the actual intricacies involved in the act? Then, you have the other article, bemoaning a writer’s use of euphemistic phrases like ‘my sex’ or ‘his length’.
Can you see my problem?
As a writer of Erotica, specifically ménage a trois novels, how realistic can I actually be? Most readers of ménage agree, the happy-ever-afters of erotic romance containing three characters or more are uncommon in the outside world. How often do you find your neighbors engaging in permanent threesomes? (Right, I wanna know where you live if this stuff goes down on your street!! Lol!!)
My point is, sometimes, realistic story plots have to go hand in hand with unrealistic ones. Do you agree? Or not? Am I talking bull? Let me know, I’d love your opinion.
And while I’m here, I have my own tale of realistic, unrealistic romance to pimp. 🙂 Ménage Material, which can be found on BookStrand is the tale of a very, very lucky lady, who is the object of two rather delicious hunks’ desires! 😀 Check it out, and let me know what you think! 🙂
