What a Great Mother’s Day! by Dalton Diaz

by Dalton Diaz

I have to admit, this Mother’s Day was one the best I’ve had in a long time. Not only did Stud let me sleep in, he woke me with coffee and the Sunday paper. Three of my four sons were home, one of them for the first Mother’s Day in probably thirteen years. All four sons and Stud pooled together and bought me my first ever Chef’s knife, which cut a watermelon like butter! We had a later afternoon gathering here with extended family and kept it simple, and it was lovely.

All of the above was wonderful, but the biggest gift of all is that about 2 weeks ago, my mom clearly recognized me. For those who don’t know me, my mother has end stage Alzheimers. Her recovery from the last bout of aspiration pneumonia was a miracle in itself, and she didn’t know who I was prior to that. I go to see her three times a week, and for at least six months if not a year, there’s been a 50/50 chance she’ll have any reaction whatsoever when I walk in the door.

Then, out of the blue, I walked in the door and she looked up with a HUGE smile and said my name. Ever since then, including when we all went on Mother’s Day, she has been happy, smiling, and communicative (as best she can). She knows my name, and that I’m her daughter. On Mother’s Day, she looked at Stud and got tears in her eyes and told him that she misses him (he goes every week). She told the boys that she loves them, though I don’t think she really knew who they were.

I know this won’t last. Heck, I didn’t expect it to last this long. Whatever it was that stopped firing up in her brain that caused her to lose that information has found some way to connect. The disease will stop it. The disease will win. I know these things, and I know how important it is for me to know and accept those two facts. I also know that I have been given a gift that is the best thing money can’t buy, and I’m going to savor it while it lasts.

Keeping Busy and a Hot Excerpt by Dalton Diaz

Once again, I couldn’t make it to RT, and as the pics start to flow, I’m feeling a bit bummed. I had high hopes for going this year because I love Vegas, and because I know that attending next year is unlikely with two kids graduating college and a big anniversary happening at the same time.

Thankfully, I have a few exciting things to keep me busy for the next week. The premier of season 2 of Outlander, the arrival of The Beast by Jr Ward, binge-watching the final season of True Blood (I was late to that party!), the construction that has finally begun on my house from last year’s storm damage, and hey…WRITING!

I’m going to leave you with a hot excerpt from Great Zeus, my story in the Gods Gone Wild anthology with Ashlyn Chase. Enjoy!

gods-gone-wild-florens3

Two Gods are in big trouble with Zeus. Gods will be gods and when these two taunt Pele for their own entertainment, she erupts, literally, creating a whole new Hawaiian island. But Zeus is not amused and must teach them a lesson they won’t forget.

Epimetheus knows he screwed up. Well, he knows it since Zeus pointed it out with a lightning bolt or two. He’s willing to take his punishment like a Titan, but all bets are off when his beloved dead wife Pandora shows up.

Pandy has no memory of him. Epimetheus has no powers, and no forethought. What could possibly go wrong?

Excerpt
“Who do you see when you look at me like that?”

What? The question brought me back to the present, where Hope was still dressed and standing in front of the bed instead of on it. She was also frowning.

I closed the distance between us and caressed her soft cheek. “You.”

“You called for Pandora when you ran toward the limo earlier. I’m not mad,” she clarified before kissing my palm. “I know you’re kind of obsessed with ancient Greek mythology. I just want to make sure you’re here with me.

That you know I’m flesh and blood Hope, a human who makes mistakes.”

“Don’t you get it? Pandora was a human gift from the gods.” I closed my eyes against a wave of emotion before being able to look at her to say the words. “I’m not mixing you up with some idea of perfection. I’m calling you, Hope, a gift beyond value. Faults and all.”

She was quiet for a moment before she nodded. “From anyone else, that would border on stalker scary. From you, it makes sense.”

I laughed. “Thanks. I think.”

“Will you do something for me now, though?” She licked her lips in a nervous gesture that made me want to beg for mercy.

“Yes.” It didn’t matter what she asked for, it was hers.

“Will you take your clothes off first this time?”

I stepped back and stripped without another word, or even a wince at leaving my pain-free zone. When I was done, I laid her hands on my bare chest.

“Please,” I took a deep breath. “Touch me.”

“Jack.” It was a whisper of desire. It was also the wrong fucking name.

“Please don’t get mad.” I put my hands over hers, afraid she’d pull away. “But that’s not my name. The Powers That Be thought I should go in under a fake name, and I’ll bet I can thank Tony for coming up with that one.”

“Thank god!” Her topaz eyes danced with humor. “So what is your real name?”

I couldn’t give her that, but it didn’t really matter beyond not calling me

Jack. “Theus.” I settled on getting as close to my real name as I dared.

“Yeah, I really am Greek.”

I kissed her, both to stop any more questions and because I really, really wanted to kiss her. It was all good until her soft palm slid down my body.

The next thing I knew, I was over her on the bed and she was pushing at my chest. “Theus, don’t you dare!”

The first time she used the name was in warning, dammit.

“Shit! Sorry!” I forced myself to roll to my back. “That was an out-of-control thing, not a trying-to-control thing, I swear.”

“Are you saying I need to tie you up?” she asked, clearly hopeful.

Oh fuck. We’d done that once. I still maintained it had resulted in a major earthquake credited to Poseidon. I groaned and covered my eyes with my arm. “Not helping!”

I felt her leave the bed. While the instant return of pain helped get me back under control, I had to wonder if I’d blown it after all. I couldn’t look, even when I heard the unmistakable sound of a suitcase zipper. Thankfully, it wasn’t long before I felt the bed dip with her weight.

When the movement stopped, I took a deep breath and let my arm fall to the sheets to clutch them in desperation. The only thing Hope was wearing was a look on her face that said she planned to eat me alive.

The next few minutes were delicious agony. Gentle touches that started at my brow, each caress followed by a soft kiss and a quick flick of her hot tongue. I let her draw it out for as long as I could, knuckles white on the sheets, body trembling out of control by the time she dipped below my rib cage. She was methodical in her torture, following a path that took her down the outside of one leg and up the inside of the other.

I’d dare any man to keep his cool when his lover spreads his legs and nips the tender insides of his thigh, let alone when that was followed by a hot flick of tongue. I was a mere man, and glad for it at that moment. Who knew what could have been unleashed with my normal energy.

She gave my other thigh the same nip and lick, but this time her tongue remained on my skin, flicking closer and closer to her true target.

“Ah, gods!” I couldn’t let her do it. One touch and I would come, and quite possibly disappear. If that happened before we made love, she would be emotionally destroyed.

Herculean effort my ass. Herc had nothing on what it took for me to release the bedsheets and grasp her hands. She looked startled, then wary. I knew what she was thinking, and that I had to talk fast.

“Please,” I rasped. “Can I be inside you the first time? After that—” I swallowed hard. “After that, it can be your mouth. Every damn day, if you want.”

That made her smile. “I’ll bet.” Her fingers tightened in mine. “But I understand what you’re saying about the first time, and I’d like that too. Theus, I…I love you. You said it before, but I didn’t. I want you to know that before our first time.”

Everything in me instantly calmed and filled with warmth. “I love you too.”

She took an audible breath. “You’re glowing again.”

“Damn straight.”

I pulled her up and into my arms and rolled us over. Not many couples got a second chance to recreate their first time together. She wasn’t a virgin this time, but I refused to dwell on that other than being grateful she wouldn’t feel any pain.

I couldn’t wait. Gods, she was so beautiful. I felt like I was drowning in those topaz eyes, letting my own love shine right back while I positioned my cock. She was hot and wet, so ready for me to make that first deep thrust.

Hotel Rendezvous Book 1

Welcome to the Menger Hotel. Where a Hotel Rendezvous isn’t always as it seems.

High School reunions are supposed to be about seeing how your classmates fared in the real world. For Jenn Bailey, it’s nothing more than good business for her beauty parlor.

Until it means her first love is coming back to town.

Eric Somers is a man on a mission. His biggest regret is not manning up after an embarrassing first time in the sack. Heading back to San Antonio for his ten-year reunion is the perfect opportunity to apologize…and maybe show Jenn Bailey he’d learned a thing or two between the sheets.

Excerpt:

The only thing that would feel better would be skin on skin. The chair was wide, and Jenn used it to her advantage by getting onto her knees, kicking off her heels in the process. It didn’t leave her as fully in his lap as before, but she had use of her hands. She went straight for the buttons of his dress shirt.

She’d seen his chest before, had felt every inch of it beneath her fingers. What was revealed with the release of each button was familiar yet different in subtle ways that made her ache to explore further. His breathing became more ragged, and he watched from lowered lids as she finally spread the open halves of his shirt.

His muscles were harder and more defined, his nipples slightly darker, tempting points. He had a bit more hair across his pecs than before, a smattering darker and thicker than that on his head.

This was a man’s chest. One she found very enticing.

The hair below his belly button was thicker and darker now, too. She followed that path with the tip of her finger until halted by his dress pants and belt.

“Oh shit,” he swore under his breath.

Jenn wasn’t sure he was aware he’d said it aloud as he let go of her waist and clutched the sides of the chair. She stopped moving in his lap, needing her concentration. There was so much to explore, and she didn’t want to miss a thing.

She pushed the shirt down to his wrists. “Leave it there,” she demanded before he could let go to remove it.

“Want your dress off,” he grated.

“Not yet.”

His eyes opened all the way, and he focused on her for a moment, then he closed them again on a groan as she began her exploration, starting at the hollow of his neck. She took her time over every inch, taking special care at his pecs, tracing the veins in his arms, his dark nipples. She loved making the muscles in his chest and arms flex with the varying strength of his grip on the chair. He trembled a few times and quickly brought it under control until she once more circled his bellybutton and traced the trail to his pants.

This time she didn’t stop at his belt buckle. She had it undone in two seconds flat, and he sucked in a sharp breath as she manipulated the button of his slacks.

Then she very carefully lowered his zipper.

“Jenn. Your dress,” he gasped between breaths. “I’m losing it. So pretty. Don’t want to…rip it.”

She looked up to find his eyes on her, the lust in his gaze making all five feet of her feel like a sexual Amazon. With a slow smile, she lowered the hidden zipper at her side and reached down to where the hem was bunched at her hips. Then she drew the dress over her head and tossed it to the floor.

He groaned and met and held her gaze like a lifeline. “I like this. I mean, I really like this, but I don’t know how much longer I can stand it. You have to come first.”

That didn’t make any sense. Unless he thought she wasn’t enjoying what she was doing? He couldn’t be more wrong. “Do you want me to stop?”

“No. God no! Just know that when I reach the end of my rope, I’m going to haul you over to that bed.”

“Well, that sounds good, too, but I am enjoying myself.” She ran her finger over the impressive, cloth-covered ridge that bulged between the open plackets of his slacks. “Honest.”

Oh fuck.” He looked away for a moment and took several deep breaths. “Please, Jenn. I don’t want to blow it with you again.”

Oh! He’d meant physically come first. The realization brought a warm bloom to her cheeks. She’d been so focused on her own success outside her comfort zone that she’d forgotten they were both trying to rewrite their history.

In his case, she had to come first.

“Understood,” she assured him. “But I want to keep going until the very last second you can stand it.”

He nodded his agreement. “I’m close, Jenn. Really close.”

“I like that. I mean, I really like that,” she said with a grin, throwing his words back at him.

My Valentine’s Day and 99 cent Sale!

I think my husband, aka Stud, is a very lucky man when it comes to Valentine’s Day. He can’t buy me chocolate – I’m allergic. He can’t buy me flowers – I’m allergic. (Plus, I’d get really mad at him for spending money on something that costs a lot and lasts a week at best.)

I do like going out to eat, but not during holiday times with big crowds and feeling rushed as the next wave of people breathe down your neck. So what’s left?

Cheap and easy. Yup, that’s me.

For our very first Valentine’s Day, back when we were first dating, I had to attend a funeral of a close family friend. Stud came over to my house later that night, bearing homemade lasagna. Over the years, we’ve come up with different variations of this, with one or the other taking the reins. It kind of depends who needs the other to step up more at the time.

This Sunday will be our 27th Valentine’s Day together. It’s one of the years that I’m stepping up because I have a need. I need to cook and have it matter. Since we became empty nesters, my cooking has done a bit of a slide. I still love to do it, but it’s just not necessary to put full meals on the table every night for two people.

Well, this weekend, my son is bringing two of his college roommates home with him for something that has nothing to do with Valentine’s Day, but I get to fill the house with good food. These poor guys have existed on really bad college food (most is bad, theirs is REALLY bad) for months. I get to change that this weekend. Strange as it sounds, Happy Valentine’s Day to me!

The Greek God of wine, women, and party, falls off a balcony during Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Now he has amnesia. All he knows is that they call him ‘Big D’, he drinks too much and ought to give up alcohol for Lent.

Mandy and Brenda flashed Dionysus right before he fell. They’re nice enough to take him to an AA meeting, and then back to their homes until he recovers his memory. Fortunately, they’re not too nice to be naughty.

Writing Military Romance

I’m going to make a confession on this Veteran’s Day. I may never write a military story. It’s not that I don’t appreciate our men and women who serve, or that I don’t personally find a man in uniform to be hotter than hot – I do!

My father was a WWII army veteran (No, I did not mix up my wars!), and my eldest son served in the air force following 9/11, going to both Afghanistan and Iraq. I’ve asked myself if these could be reasons why writing military romance doesn’t appeal to me. After all, who wants to think of their father or their son while writing erotic romance, right?

Ew! No. Just no.

However… I already know I can keep those thoughts out of the equation. I wrote Stray Lovers, about a veterinarian and an animal control officer, while I worked in a veterinarian office. Winters’ Thaw, a Cougar story, when two of my sons were in their twenties. Oh, and Lesson Learned, a m/m college romance, when my youngest two sons were in college.

So why not military romance?

You see, as incredibly proud as I am for my son’s 6 years of service and everything it has brought him in the following years, not to mention the fact that he came home safely every time, his journey with the military was the hardest time I’ve ever had as a mother. He set the worry bar. I’ve often said that when your eldest leaves home to go to war, having the other kids go off to college is a piece of cake.

I’m sure this specific writing block will pass. I am grateful to my son, my father and all men and women who serve in the military. I love reading military romance in all sub genres, so it makes sense that I’d write one someday.

Hey, what if the heroine is a military mom? Hmmm…

The Name Game by Dalton Diaz

Ever wonder what goes into choosing names for the characters in our books? For some authors, the names have to be chosen to start the book. I know one author who has to have a title for the book, and changing that during the writing process throws her completely off course.

My process is, well, a process. I have to start the book and get a feel for the characters before I can settle on their names. Don’t get me wrong, names and titles are very important to me. So important, that I have to basically wait for the characters to tell me what they want to be called. That said, we do have an understanding: no names of ex’s or family members will be used. That’s uncomfortable, and depending on the character, can be downright gross!

I also like basic names and nicknames for my heroes and heroines. While I have been known to turn their names into jokes or a parody a time or two, there will be no heroes with He-Man names or Heroines named after deadly plants or weather patterns. After all, Hemlock isn’t supposed to be eaten, and who would want to touch Poison Ivy?

After the book has been written, it is entirely possible that names and titles will be changed if it is not a self-pubbed book. That’s usually fine. It’s during the process that I have to feel the name connection to the characters. Just don’t expect me to remember the hero and/or heroine’s name if it has been changed. Hell, even if it hasn’t been changed. I still call my own children the wrong name.

All in all, the names of characters and/or a title shouldn’t stop you from reading a book. Unless one of those is the name of an ex or a family member and it’s downright gross…

Check Out My New Website – by Dalton Diaz

As usual, there’s a story behind the action. I think it’s pretty well established at this point that I’m not the best when it comes to technology. I’m not the worst in my circles, but it does take me awhile to catch on. It doesn’t help that these days, technology is like buying a new car. Blink twice and there’s something bigger and better whizzing by while I’m still trying to merge into the slow lane of the information highway.

FullSizeRender-4

Case in point: the electronics junk drawer.

Sometimes, though, it works out that bigger and better means everything slides right into place.

To be honest, I had never been very happy with my website. It was functional, and I could make changes – by crashing my computer a few times, lots of prayer, a few tears, and a whole lot of cursing. When Yahoo sold off their site builder to a company that stated they won’t support adult content, I still wondered if I could slide under the radar. Anything was better than going through the hell of building another site. That’s pretty much when Brenna Zinn threatened to kick my ass (or worse, not drive me to the In N Out Burger in TX this Feb!) if I didn’t get with the program. I had no choice but to comply.

Mmmmmm, Double Double with fries…sorry, my mind drifted. Give me a minute.

My first step, as always, was research. A number of people suggested using Wix to build the site, and deeper research showed that it worked well with a Mac. I bit the bullet and gave it a shot. Lo and behold, even I could figure it out! The tools did what they were supposed to do, it all played nicely with my Mac, and they even offered a mobile view. I would highly recommend Wix to anyone.

I am now the proud owner of a new website, and I’m a happy camper. Let me know what you think, and don’t forget to sign up for my newsletter. It will go out once a month at absolute most.
