How to keep the sexual tension high, by Alice Gaines

All of us here love hot, hot romance, full of luscious love scenes.  Realistically, if you’re writing an erotic romance, your characters can’t be frolicking in the sack the entire time.  The difference between erotica and erotic romance is that the latter has three-dimensional characters and things actually happen in the story.

Still, you want to keep the sexual tension as close to the simmer point as possible.  This is especially true at the beginning of the story.  Unless you have a plot where the h/h already know each other and the action begins with them in bed, they’ll have to meet and become attracted to each other before they get to the really hot stuff.  So, how do you maintain sexual tension when the characters aren’t actually having sex?

Last month, I discussed the sexy or erotic premise.  This month, let me share some tips on creating sexual tension outside of the love scenes.

The first encounter
Beginning writers often make the mistake of having their characters drooling all over each other from the first time they meet. Even in erotic romance, a character seldom goes from neutral to sexual excitement when an intriguing new person enters the room.

Time stops briefly while the two people become aware of each other for the first time. What you need is a beat while their “eyes met across a crowded room.” (Note: Eyes don’t fly out of people’s heads.) Now, notice one thing or two maximum about the other character.

Continue the scene, dropping in more details as you go along. When the two characters interact, make clear that the non POV character has also noticed things about the POV character. Does he focus on parts of her body? Does he comment on her personal attributes in his dialogue? (“I’ve never seen you here before.” “Do you smile like that at every man?”)

Indicate interest with eye contact. The classic indicator of feminine interest is for the woman to make eye contact, look down or away (perhaps smiling or biting her lip), and then make eye contact again. That should tell your reader that she’ll welcome a man into her personal space. It’ll get a man’s attention, for sure.

Men are probably more forthright in expressing interest with eye contact. If the non-POV man does this, it may fluster the POV woman in a pleasant way. Her skin may grow warm, and she’ll almost certainly look away.

Next step – personal space
Shortly after the attraction between h/h is formed, one is certainly likely to enter into the other’s personal space. In historical romance, this often takes the form of a dance at a ball. This is a socially acceptable way for the two people to embrace, but that doesn’t mean it’s a trivial matter for either of them. Again, one or both of them may experience a flush of excitement, although it won’t be felt as truly sexual. All the senses may be heightened. Your character may notice the rustle of skirts, light and shadow in the hall, and various smells.

Dance or no, once the characters are up close and personal, they’re literally within breathing space of each other. That is, if their faces are pointed toward each other, they’ll be able to feel each other’s breath. Naturally, they can smell each other. One hopes, they smell good, whether that’s historically accurate for your book or not. Soap, shampoo, cologne, skin lotion come up often. Leather works for a horsewoman/man. If she’s wearing flowers, he’ll be aware of their scent.

H/h will be aware of each other’s height relative to his/her own. A man might note where the woman’s nose reaches on his body. Does it come up to his shoulder? To his chin? Especially if he’s much taller, he may feel protective of her, which can be frustrating if she insists on maintaining independence. She may feel a bit overwhelmed by his height and the breadth of his shoulders. If she’s always felt ungainly, she may enjoy the feeling of being petite next to him. They very likely will be aware of each other’s body heat.

You can play with physical proximity. If she’s bent over the craps table at a casino, he could reach for the dice, bringing his body close to hers. She can duck under him to help him find a file in the file cabinet. Either can reach past the other to push the elevator button. They can be stuck in a carriage or a cab together.

If you’ve ever found yourself in this position with someone who isn’t a lover or good friend, you know how awkward it feels if you’re not attracted to them or how exciting it feels if you are.

Sexual banter
The main form of sexual tension in dialogue falls under the category of sexual banter. This can range from quite innocent to quite explicit.

Innocent:
She stared out over the ocean. “What a beautiful view.”
“It certainly is,” he answered.
“But, you’re not looking at the ocean,” she said.
He gazed into her eyes. “There’s an ocean nearby?”

Less innocent:
“What have you heard of me?” he asked.
“That you’re a terrible rake.”
He laughed. “Then, I’ll do my best to be a better rake.”

Even less innocent:
She yawned.
“Late night?” he asked.
“Coffee, please.”
“Who’s the lucky guy?”
She stared at him. “William Shakespeare.”
“When he needs a stand-in, let me know.”

Quite explicit. There’s an amazing scene in The Taming of the Shrew where Katharine and Petruchio first meet. There’s a lot of great banter in there, but one of his lines is amazing. They’ve been going back and forth about tongues and telling tales. When she tells him she’s done and she’s leaving, he answers, “What, with my tongue in your tail?” I first heard that about 45 years ago and have never forgotten it.

RAISE A GLASS- Talina Perkins

index

2015 was crazy in just a few words. With only a few hours left in the year it’s hard not to take a moment and reflect on what has passed, but also look forward to what is in store for you and myself as the clock rolls over. I’ve never been a big believer in new years resolutions, but I do think that a mental reset is always a good thing. A fresh start, a chance at starting over, and a full 365 days of making sure this year is better! It’s exciting to think about, right? There are a lot of plans in motion for me and I’m biting my nails to keep from pouring everything out on the page right now! Since I have to be a good girl, let’s talk about what you have planned for the new year. I’d love to hear anything you want to share. 🙂

Wherever the new year finds you, may your wishes and dreams come true! Happy New Years my friends and thank you for hanging out with me and inviting me into your hearts with my stories and characters. I have so many more to tell and I can’t wait to share them with you soon. I’ll be back on January 4th with a special post and maybe a giveaway. 😉

Be safe, raise a glass, and welcome the turn of the clock with a smile and a wink!

~ * ~

“Pardon the intrusion, my lords. This just arrived for Master Benedict.”

The butler passed him an envelope with the identical wax seal from the note his father received earlier. Only this time, the letter was decorated with intricate designs.

“Thank you, Horace.”

“What is it? Who is it from?” his father asked quizzically.

“I don’t know, Father. I’ll have a look at it later. I’m rather late for a few appointments now. I will check in on you later this afternoon. Do tell Mother I will be asking Estelle to join us for dinner tonight.”

His father groaned yet again. While his parents approved of his desire to marry, they simply did not care for his selection of a wife. The aristocratic snobs that they were, they had expected him to marry an equal, or a lady that came with an extremely large dowry. Estelle was Baron Humphrey’s daughter, and while her dowry wasn’t that of an earl’s or viscount’s daughter, her purse strings and entitlements didn’t bother him in the least.

From the moment he saw her for the first time at the market, he’d been smitten with the petite and exotic beauty. He’d lifted her from the muddy street, and as her deep dark eyes settled on his, she’d bewitched him. Mind, it took several weeks for him to dissuade another potential suitor, not that the lad stood a chance. Estelle was one catch he would never give up, and now he had to find the perfect home for them, but where? She lived in town with her father and widowed aunt in a modest townhouse during the season, and after that, they resided in a country home with a full set of staff and several tenants to oversee. All of which he could match with his inheritance; but for Estelle everything had to be perfect. She deserved nothing but the world, and if he could give it to her, he would.

“Horace,” Benedict called out, reaching for his hat. “See that my carriage is ready post haste. I have to go to town and begin looking at properties.”

“Yes, my lord. Right away.” The butler disappeared around the corner, leaving Benedict alone in the foyer.

He desperately wanted to open the envelope but refused to do it so close to home. He didn’t want his father to worry, nor did he want the servants to speculate on what was the matter. He’d open the blasted thing and read it in the privacy of his carriage.

Darkness shrouded the street, as if evil lurked for its first victim of the day. He stepped in, and gave his driver directions to Mayfair. A quick scout of the area would give him an idea of where there might be some opportunities. His future countess deserved the best. After scouring some neighborhoods, he’d collect his lovely bride and return home for dinner.

A few minutes into the drive, he pulled out the letter and opened it.

Lord Benedict St. John,

You are formally invited to Hawthorne Hall as a guest of Lord George Cuthbert. Celebrations are expected to last a week, and we hope that you will stay for the duration. Several festivities, including a masque, will be held in honor of George’s return from the continent. We hope you will attend, and look forward to being introduced to your lovely bride-to-be.

Regards,

Lady Cuthbert, Countess of Hawthorne.

Nothing made sense. Why would Lord Cuthbert send a letter blackmailing his father, and then invite him and Estelle to attend a party at Hawthorne Hall? It had to be a ruse of sorts, but then again, he could use this as an opportunity to dig more into the situation with his father. Yet, was it wise to introduce Estelle to this particular crowd of society, especially when there were other sinister things being plotted? If anything happened to Estelle while she was in his protection, he would never forgive himself. Nevertheless, if he told her about his plan and what was happening, she might be willing to aid him in freeing his father from the devil’s clutches.

To Porn or Not to Porn

Yep, that is the question. It’s a question I ask myself every once in awhile, usually after some kind of viewing of, well, porn.

This time, the question, ahem, arose when we got a weekend of free Cinemax, aka Skinemax. For me, the experience was a Not to Porn. Late night cable still seems to run toward, “the sluttier the better”, and that just doesn’t do it for me. If I never see another pair of over-inflated breasts struggling to jiggle, I’ll be a happy camper.

I need sensuality. I need a reason for them to be in bed together that amounts to more than realizing it’s been longer than three minutes since anyone screwed. It’s safe to say there’s something for everyone churning out of the porn industry these days, but I doubt I’ll be finding anything I like on late night cable. I will say that at least it’s better than the 70’s and 80’s when three guys and a girl always meant:

Guy 1 – Doggy Style

Guy 2 – Getting Blow Job

Guy 3 – Standing over other three, masturbating

Nothing wrong with any of those scenarios, but that’s the best they could do with three guys and a girl? Cripes, my teenage fantasies were better than that! Hmm, wonder if that has anything to do with what I write now? As for my adult fantasies…well, let’s just say I’m in the right – write? – business! Women statistically prefer their imagination over something visual, and I’m no exception. Heck, we talked about that last month!

So no, we won’t be ordering Skinemax anytime soon. I’ll still be turning off the tv and reaching for a good, sensual book with characters I can like. Care to join me?

Within the Cocoon of Silence…

7d099184000be060ef270958fc75a4ce

The silence is loud if you’re listening.

… is when the magic comes to life.

There are days when my mind is quiet and others when the words flow with no end in sight. Constant ramblings, snippets of story lines, dialogue, scene ideas, and what have you.

Today, though, has been a hushed day with little to no extra chatter. The normal built-in to-do list is on autopilot with little to no luck of turning it off, but from there, the home front is still. Calm even.

Come to think of it, this entire week has been quiet, with no rush to click open Facebook with some sort of sassy comment or quick words of encouragement I like to share at times. At first, I was worried. Worried because the words were few and I am in the middle of a story. A scary place to have a loss of words.

However, during the stillness of this morning, before the children roused and started their daily weekend activities, something occurred to me. It’s okay NOT to have something to say all the time. It’s okay to give myself the time to turn reflective and let the daily humdrum fade away. You know what I’m talking about? That special ‘you’ time?

What if this is the calm before the storm? The stolen time before all hell breaks loose and I have so much to say there won’t be enough time in the day to get it all out of my head? I crave those days, truly. But what am I to learn when the words slow? Should I force them or take a beat and let the silence speak?

In the last few days I’ve come to realize my muse is sneaky and clever, willing to give me my answers, if I only listen. Letting the thoughts, ideas and words accumulate, marinate if you will, is just as powerful as typing away word after word. I discovered this recently when my muse woke me from a dead sleep and gave me exactly what I needed to continue a scene. Perplexing and mind opening how it took the wee hours of the morning for my mind to be quiet enough to find what I needed.

In just a few hours I begin two long projects that I have no doubt will consume my every thought for the next four months. These projects have weighed on my mind for the last year and a half. My muse knows this and I suspect is preparing for the heavy work load, hoarding the creative energy until it’s time to let it overflow and pour onto the page.

For now I must embrace the quiet, enjoy the stillness, and let my mind harness the creativeness the universe is providing. My muse is smart enough to listen.

I just need to accept the quiet as a gift and sit back, ready for what is to come.

In the mean time, tell me what you do when the silence comes? Do you like to disconnect and relax with a good book? Take to writing in a journal maybe? Something I would love to pick up as a habit, by the way. Or do you just settle in for a good long ‘you’ time?

A Little Tequila, a Sunset, Steamy Sex and Things Can Get Explosive!

Or at least they do south of the Mexican border!

Ever wonder about the how or the why behind an author picking a story’s setting? Whether the characters are molded around the place or if the characters dictate the location? There’s a multitude of answers to this question, with no real set answer, but there’s still a kernel of wonder when you flip to the first page of a new story.

Every time I pick up a book, location is everything (Not true, it’s the cover that pulls me in. More on that in a minute J). I want to know where I’m going when I step into a new story. I love it when blurbs and covers hint at the destination like it’s a little secret of its own to be discovered. Hmm. Doesn’t that sound familiar? Like a pre-planned trip you only have to show up for.

Inspiration behind explosive scene in Controlled Heat

As romance readers are we not all for exotic adventures of not only places, but of the heart as well? It’s why we love the romance genre, right? Billionaire heroes matched with heroines who don’t give a damn about the hero’s bank account, but still manage to make their girl swoon with the most lavish of trips (50 Shades anyone?). Or how about Latin lovers who draw us into their culture with a flourish of their Spanish flair that strokes our imaginations and our romantic sides? All stories delicious and rich with exotic descriptions.

Before I set fingers to keyboard for the Sexy Siesta books I knew the series needed a place with its own signature, a place readers would want to escape from the mundane world and enjoy seeing through my character’s eyes.

images

A hidden treasure off the coast of Puerto Vallarta

While His by Sunrise takes place in Houston, the heroine, Isabella is from Mexico. Tequila Sunset and Sunrise for Three pushed a little further south and takes us past the border and into the popular beaches of Cabos and Puerto Vallarta. Both known as party towns with a darker side not everyone sees. They say write what you know and after living here for almost twenty years I know Mexico. 😉

Beneath the multifaceted layers of this culture-rich country, there’s a hidden world of danger and adventure. There’s something exciting about crossing the border into a place where time seems to have paused. Where you can ditch the “real world” and become anyone you want while visiting. Its stuff stories are made of and, honestly, serves as a wonderful backdrop for my ruthless drug cartels and a bad-ass group of Recon Marines willing to put their lives on the line day after day.

Add a little tequila, a sunset, and some steamy sex and things are bound to get explosive! 😉

But what about that cover? I’m a total self proclaimed cover girl (I can’t tell you how long I poured over my covers before I was satisfied with their design). Some of you may shake your head at me and tsk, and I totally understand, but want to know a deep dark secret? I never read a book if the cover doesn’t catch my eye first. Harsh, I know, but from the moment I see the cover my mind immediately starts identifying with the characters. First impressions and all that, I suppose. If I’m sold on the package, I move on to the blurb. If both can depict the setting of the story, all the better, right?

Do you get caught up in the artwork like I do? Since I moonlight as a cover artist, maybe my artistic eye has cursed me with the need to see something brilliant before I dive into a new world.

Where do you stand? Do you look for books set in other countries or even cities? Do you look at the cover and decide yay or nay? Let’s talk! I’ll pick one winner for a Kindle copy of Tequila Sunset. Don’t forget to leave your email.

Writer Musings & An Action-Packed Excerpt

Sorry if I sound wonky and a little fuzzy! I’ve been in the writing cave for a bit too long this time around. Heck, I wasn’t sure what day of the week it was until I came up for air around ten last night. After three days straight of constant wordage and dealing with multiple characters ‘tudes, things can get a little blurry. Speaking of time, anyone else want to know where the first fifteen days of the year went?

With release day for Hexing the Alpha right around the corner, my mind is a mixture of quotation marks, periods, and hunky man pictures like this one…

Inspiration behind Joel Cordona (new hero of the Sexy Siesta series)

Hey, it’s all in the name of inspiration, right? My imagination can do many things, but a little eye candy always helps the word count flow smoothly. 😉

*cough* As I was saying, I’m getting into the groove of the new year with several releases on the list, but more on those as they come along. In the mean time, how about a snippet from my latest release, Sunrise for Three? Have you met Marc, Mia, and Colt? If not, I’ve been told they are a steamy trio to get held up in Mexico with, but you be the judge. 😉 Do you think two Former Recon Marines and a fearless sexy Latina stand a chance with love while fighting against a ruthless cartel leader? You’ll have to read their story to discover if they get a sexy Sunrise for Three!

EXCERPT from Sunrise for Three

The gauzy white fluff of the curtain blew into her face, followed by a gust of wind from outside scented with the salty brine of the ocean. The curtain whipped back and forth in the strong wind then returned to lie against the window. Something red caught her attention, and she tried to lift her hand to finger the strange bright red substance, but her arm wouldn’t budge.

Heat blossomed out from her right shoulder and it dropped her to one knee. Air lodged in her lungs and her heart beat erratically. ¿Que diablos?Sunrise For Three200x300

Her vision blurred from a shroud of cold that settled over her. Like every ounce of her blood had drained, leaving nothing but a wash of cold tingles behind.

It all happened so quickly, her mind unable to make sense of anything. Male voices called to her, but she couldn’t reach them. Someone was moving her, pulling her deeper into the living room. She worked her legs, but she couldn’t get solid footing beneath her. Her body a paralyzed dead weight.

Pain swiftly replaced the burst of initial cold.

More bullets pelted the walls and other windows, sending the glass crashing into the unforgiving Spanish tiled flooring.

In a sudden rush, every nerve ending between her brain and shoulder came alive with bolts of electricity that raked across her chest and arm in waves of blinding pain. Warm liquid wet her T-shirt and the only thought that came to mind was it wasn’t her T-shirt. She had borrowed it.

Marc pulled her behind the couch and leaned her against the baseboard. “Let me see how bad.” He shoved his sidearm into the waistband of his jeans, then gently peeled back the collar of her shirt. She grimaced. “¡Hijole…wow!”

“Don’t move, darling. I’ve got you.”

His voice anchored her and helped clear the fog her mind had slipped behind to avoid the pain from the bullet that pierced her flesh. The full force of it rooted in her brain and she fought against the black veil lulling her closer. She shook her head. Her heart raced and she knew if she closed her eyes if only for a second that she would pass out. She’d be damned if she would be some damsel in distress princess.

“Did it go through? Graze her? What?” Colt kneeled beside her, holding both sides of her face. “She’s looking really damn pale, man.”

Three more rounds pinged against the cement column dividing the windows from the sliding back door just off to their left. Too close for comfort, but the men didn’t even flinch. “Look at me, sweetheart. This is going to hurt like a mother, but he has to do it.”

Ahí. Puta madre,” she gritted out a string of expletives at Marc. He slipped her arm out of the sleeve of her shirt and lifted the now bloody rag over her head and discarded it on the floor. Black dots danced in her vision. She didn’t want to pass out.

“She’s bleeding, but it’s a clean hit that split an inch gash along her shoulder. It might have nicked the bone, but I can’t see.”

It felt like something hit bone.

She bit into the flesh of her lip and tried to calm her breathing.

“We need some backup and fast, man. The fuckers have us out gunned with Ak-47s. Shots sound like they’re still coming from open water. Could be the waves messing with the sound, but—”

“You’re right. I saw them. Not them, but a boat earlier when I was standing by the window. It just didn’t click at the time.”

Marc and Colt looked at each other over the top of her head.

“Oh, darling, we are going to have a fucking serious talk about you not giving us all Intel when it happens, woman. Wait here.”
