Excerpt

A knock slam through Nick’s unit and woke him from a sensual dream, one where a soft, willing woman lay over him. He opened his eyes and stared at the golden-red lock of hair in his line of vision. A small hand pressed against the center of his chest and a naked body slid away from his.

“Nick, someone is at the door.” Rane soft voice broke through the appealing remnants of his fantasy with reality. “I can’t answer it, because my clothes haven’t arrived yet.”

He shifted his weight to the edge of the bed while she moved to other side next to the wall. “No problem, I’ll get it.”

The banging noise started again.

“Hold on, I’m coming.” He retrieved his pants from the floor and stepped into them.

“I’ll wait here,” Rane said before he strolled out of the room.

He’d didn’t look back for fear of changing his mind about leaving. The chance of him getting any more time to satisfy his sexual cravings today were dwindling down to nil. The mine production schedule took precedent over his personal life.

After pressing the device to unhook the lock, Nick pulled open the door. Vince stood on the threshold, grinning. A large chest sat at his feet.

“Glad to see you can still walk.” Vince glanced around and peeked into Nick’s unit. “So where’s your companion?”

“In bed,” Nick grumbled and pushed the door almost close.

“Wait, I have your companion’s clothes here.” Vince pointed to the oversize metal trunk at his feet. “And a note from Salzar.”

“All right.” Nick opened the door and held it while Vince shoved the strongbox into his apartment. “Put it over there.” Nick pointed to the space in front of the couch.

Vince did his bidding then straightened and glanced around expectantly. “Aren’t you going to introduce me to your lady friend?”

“Not a chance. Now give me Salzar’s note and get the hell out.” Nick held out a hand and waited with his other hand on the door to close behind his manager’s ass.

Vince grinned and pulled an envelope from his pocket. “Can’t say that I blame you, but I couldn’t resist asking.”

He passed Nick the note and walked through the door. “And by the way, you don’t need to worry about the mine. I’ve got everything under control.”

“Good.” Nick slammed the door and tore into Salzar’s note.

Cover Reveal!-Rhonda Lee Carver

Here is my new cover for UNEXPECTED HERO (Buttermilk Valley). Releasing this month!

Blurb:

Gunnar Knox is on his second tour in Iraq when he gets an unexpected lifeline in the form of letters from a stranger, Pastor Trace Atwell. After six months of correspondence, the letters from the pastor stop coming. The last letter contains a family picture of the pastor, his wife and their son and an invitation to come and visit them at their farm when Gunnar’s tour is up.

Eighteen months later, he’s back in the States, with a wish to meet the happy family in the picture. However, things aren’t as he had anticipated when he arrives at the Atwell farm.  Pastor Trace has passed away…

Grace Atwell is a widow raising her son alone, starting a new business, and things are falling down around her ears. When the aloof U.S. Marine shows up on her doorstep, she assumes he is there for the advertised handyman position and hires him on the spot. Once he starts helping around the house, going above and beyond, she realizes how much she has missed having a man around the farm—and the feeling of being wanted. No man has ever made her feel this special, this desirable.

Caught off guard by the unexpected emotion he feels for Grace and her son, Gunnar keeps the letters and picture a secret. He believes an unseen force had brought him to Buttermilk Valley, Georgia to help Grace and Daxton, and to protect them. He owed the pastor. After all, his encouraging words had been Gunnar’s support when he thought he’d never make it out of the Middle East alive.

As Grace and Gunnar grow closer, the secret becomes heavier and a dangerous presence awaits an opportunity to tear their passionate love affair apart.

Will love be enough? Will Grace accept Gunnar’s baggage? Did fate bring them together?

Unexpected_Hero_Final

And here is an unedited excerpt:

Gunnar recognized her immediately as the woman in the photo. His lungs seized, not wanting to work. He forced air in through his nose and out through his mouth, glad for a moment to gain himself while she was on the phone. He grabbed a peek of her while she stared at his tattoo and then she lifted her chin, meeting his gaze. There went his lungs again, refusing to function. She was much prettier than the picture, but he could see the dark circles rimming her eyes and the happiness he saw in the photo was missing from her expression. She looked tired and he could relate. He knew all too well what it was like to be exhausted in a way that sleep couldn’t fix. Her long, flowing red/blonde hair hung in soft ringlets over her bare shoulders exposed in the nice fitting tank top. Big blue eyes—cornflower blue—surrounded by thick dark lashes, but he memorized that from the picture. A splattering of freckles covering her nose was the only thing that marred her perfect alabaster skin.

He rubbed the bridge of his nose, checking himself on appropriate behavior. In his defense, Grace Atwell was a beauty. But she was someone else’s beauty.

She looked about as surprised to see him as he was to see her, maybe even a bit frightened. He could have that effect on some people, and he guessed he should have taken the time to shave his beard and called first. He took a step toward the door, ready to high tail it out of there. This was a huge mistake.

A smile crossed her lips, but he knew it wasn’t real. He compared it to the one in the picture and it didn’t stack up, not even close. She acknowledged him with a narrowed expression and motioned for him to hang tight while she finished her call. He couldn’t leave now.

He nodded. He wasn’t in a hurry. He hadn’t gotten far enough to plan where he’d go, what he’d do, after he left here.

Not wanting it to appear like he was staring, he turned and examined the room. A maze of boxes scattered the space and the walls were bare, except for a large bulletin board.  He scanned the contents with little interest, until he came to the picture of Pastor Trace—younger and he was standing at the pulpit. Gunnar stepped forward, his heart skipping ten beats as he read the newspaper article pinned to the cork board. “Pastor killed in a foiled robbery. A town mourns.” The words seemed to blur as he searched for information—searched for a date.

Then he saw it. Pastor Trace was killed eighteen months ago, two weeks before Gunnar had received the last letter.

His mouth dried. He felt sick to his stomach as the puzzle pieces came together.

He didn’t receive any more letters from the pastor for a reason…he was killed.

Gunnar’s mind spun in circles as he wrapped his brain around the truth. How could this be possible? He’d been in a war forsaken country and lived to tell about it and Pastor Trace, a man who’d saved Gunnar’s life with encouragement and words of support, living in the safety of a small town, was shot to death during a robbery.

Within the Cocoon of Silence…

7d099184000be060ef270958fc75a4ce

The silence is loud if you’re listening.

… is when the magic comes to life.

There are days when my mind is quiet and others when the words flow with no end in sight. Constant ramblings, snippets of story lines, dialogue, scene ideas, and what have you.

Today, though, has been a hushed day with little to no extra chatter. The normal built-in to-do list is on autopilot with little to no luck of turning it off, but from there, the home front is still. Calm even.

Come to think of it, this entire week has been quiet, with no rush to click open Facebook with some sort of sassy comment or quick words of encouragement I like to share at times. At first, I was worried. Worried because the words were few and I am in the middle of a story. A scary place to have a loss of words.

However, during the stillness of this morning, before the children roused and started their daily weekend activities, something occurred to me. It’s okay NOT to have something to say all the time. It’s okay to give myself the time to turn reflective and let the daily humdrum fade away. You know what I’m talking about? That special ‘you’ time?

What if this is the calm before the storm? The stolen time before all hell breaks loose and I have so much to say there won’t be enough time in the day to get it all out of my head? I crave those days, truly. But what am I to learn when the words slow? Should I force them or take a beat and let the silence speak?

In the last few days I’ve come to realize my muse is sneaky and clever, willing to give me my answers, if I only listen. Letting the thoughts, ideas and words accumulate, marinate if you will, is just as powerful as typing away word after word. I discovered this recently when my muse woke me from a dead sleep and gave me exactly what I needed to continue a scene. Perplexing and mind opening how it took the wee hours of the morning for my mind to be quiet enough to find what I needed.

In just a few hours I begin two long projects that I have no doubt will consume my every thought for the next four months. These projects have weighed on my mind for the last year and a half. My muse knows this and I suspect is preparing for the heavy work load, hoarding the creative energy until it’s time to let it overflow and pour onto the page.

For now I must embrace the quiet, enjoy the stillness, and let my mind harness the creativeness the universe is providing. My muse is smart enough to listen.

I just need to accept the quiet as a gift and sit back, ready for what is to come.

In the mean time, tell me what you do when the silence comes? Do you like to disconnect and relax with a good book? Take to writing in a journal maybe? Something I would love to pick up as a habit, by the way. Or do you just settle in for a good long ‘you’ time?

New Release, Exclusive Excerpt, & Sunday Treats!

Happy Sunday everyone! Today I’m taking the kiddos to the beach for a little sun and play in the sand before the work week kicks off again. I start a new story come Monday and my batteries are running low. Not a good combo so some down time sounds really nice. Before I lather on the sunscreen I wanted to leave everyone with some sweet treats. I hope you’re all having a beautiful weekend filled with friends, family and a fabulous book!

Though Valentines might be over, I don’t think we need a special day to take home a hot alpha shifter or a sexy Marine, right? Last week I released Hexing the Alpha, the first in a brand new werewolf romance series. As promised in my last post, I’m sharing an exclusive excerpt with all the readers here at 69 Shades.

Today is also the last day to pick up the second book in my Sexy Siesta series, Tequila Sunset, while it’s still only 99cents! It goes back to regular price tomorrow!

Hexing Excerpt:

“Tell me you have it ready, Honor,” answered a nervous voice through the earpiece.

Honor’s heart swelled for the woman on the other end. She was so desperate for love she’d try anything. It’s why she’d agreed to help out with the love potion. If only her sisters would see it her way, she could have delivered and collected days ago.

Honor traced the soft edges of a napkin, her back to the crowd forming around the bar. “Hey, Marabelle. The potion is ready. When would you like to meet for delivery?”

Hexing-the-alpha_HMH_TP5x7

What’s a witch to do when her love spell goes wrong and the sexy alpha werewolf of her dreams wants to mate?

“Right now if you can. I don’t want to waste another minute if you know what I mean.”

Honor rolled her eyes and smothered a chuckle at her client’s innuendo. She hoped the poor man on the other end of the spell could handle the lust-filled night Marabelle had in mind for them.

“The sooner the better. How about in an hour? My place? Yours? A la clandestine, I presume?” she added in a low whisper. Humans understood how her Council’s law worked, which helped to explain why the forbidden brew came with a hefty price tag.

Before she could respond, Honor’s magick shimmered the length of her spine and instinct stiffened her muscles. “Your place works fine. See you then, Marabelle.”

Snapping her phone closed, she whirled on her heel, expecting to find one of her sisters. Instead, chiseled muscles defined by outdoor labor and encased in black cotton came into view. She traced a path first down to see solid thighs covered in the sexiest fucking black jeans she’d ever seen on a man and up to find a gorgeous set of dark blue eyes staring down at her.

“Getting into trouble again?” he drawled, his rough baritone doing wicked things to her cool composure.

That was on the outside. On the inside two emotions warred for control. Fear of what he might have overheard with his heightened hearing. And nerve-searing, thigh-clenching lust.

Lust was winning by a mile.

He anchored his hands on two wooden chairs on either side of him and breathed in deeply then released on a long sigh. “Honor.”

Why did he have to say her name as if he’d just made love with her?

Jake—the werewolf shifter that starred in all her fantasies—stood so close she could reach out and touch any part of her fantasy she wished.

He must have sensed the turn her dirty mind had taken because his pupils dilated and the rims of his irises brightened with an otherworldly glow in a color she could only describe as a mixture of sapphire with shards of ruby. The contrast just as striking as the man.

A Little Tequila, a Sunset, Steamy Sex and Things Can Get Explosive!

Or at least they do south of the Mexican border!

Ever wonder about the how or the why behind an author picking a story’s setting? Whether the characters are molded around the place or if the characters dictate the location? There’s a multitude of answers to this question, with no real set answer, but there’s still a kernel of wonder when you flip to the first page of a new story.

Every time I pick up a book, location is everything (Not true, it’s the cover that pulls me in. More on that in a minute J). I want to know where I’m going when I step into a new story. I love it when blurbs and covers hint at the destination like it’s a little secret of its own to be discovered. Hmm. Doesn’t that sound familiar? Like a pre-planned trip you only have to show up for.

Inspiration behind explosive scene in Controlled Heat

As romance readers are we not all for exotic adventures of not only places, but of the heart as well? It’s why we love the romance genre, right? Billionaire heroes matched with heroines who don’t give a damn about the hero’s bank account, but still manage to make their girl swoon with the most lavish of trips (50 Shades anyone?). Or how about Latin lovers who draw us into their culture with a flourish of their Spanish flair that strokes our imaginations and our romantic sides? All stories delicious and rich with exotic descriptions.

Before I set fingers to keyboard for the Sexy Siesta books I knew the series needed a place with its own signature, a place readers would want to escape from the mundane world and enjoy seeing through my character’s eyes.

images

A hidden treasure off the coast of Puerto Vallarta

While His by Sunrise takes place in Houston, the heroine, Isabella is from Mexico. Tequila Sunset and Sunrise for Three pushed a little further south and takes us past the border and into the popular beaches of Cabos and Puerto Vallarta. Both known as party towns with a darker side not everyone sees. They say write what you know and after living here for almost twenty years I know Mexico. 😉

Beneath the multifaceted layers of this culture-rich country, there’s a hidden world of danger and adventure. There’s something exciting about crossing the border into a place where time seems to have paused. Where you can ditch the “real world” and become anyone you want while visiting. Its stuff stories are made of and, honestly, serves as a wonderful backdrop for my ruthless drug cartels and a bad-ass group of Recon Marines willing to put their lives on the line day after day.

Add a little tequila, a sunset, and some steamy sex and things are bound to get explosive! 😉

But what about that cover? I’m a total self proclaimed cover girl (I can’t tell you how long I poured over my covers before I was satisfied with their design). Some of you may shake your head at me and tsk, and I totally understand, but want to know a deep dark secret? I never read a book if the cover doesn’t catch my eye first. Harsh, I know, but from the moment I see the cover my mind immediately starts identifying with the characters. First impressions and all that, I suppose. If I’m sold on the package, I move on to the blurb. If both can depict the setting of the story, all the better, right?

Do you get caught up in the artwork like I do? Since I moonlight as a cover artist, maybe my artistic eye has cursed me with the need to see something brilliant before I dive into a new world.

Where do you stand? Do you look for books set in other countries or even cities? Do you look at the cover and decide yay or nay? Let’s talk! I’ll pick one winner for a Kindle copy of Tequila Sunset. Don’t forget to leave your email.

Writer Musings & An Action-Packed Excerpt

Sorry if I sound wonky and a little fuzzy! I’ve been in the writing cave for a bit too long this time around. Heck, I wasn’t sure what day of the week it was until I came up for air around ten last night. After three days straight of constant wordage and dealing with multiple characters ‘tudes, things can get a little blurry. Speaking of time, anyone else want to know where the first fifteen days of the year went?

With release day for Hexing the Alpha right around the corner, my mind is a mixture of quotation marks, periods, and hunky man pictures like this one…

And this one…

Inspiration behind Joel Cordona (new hero of the Sexy Siesta series)

Hey, it’s all in the name of inspiration, right? My imagination can do many things, but a little eye candy always helps the word count flow smoothly. 😉

*cough* As I was saying, I’m getting into the groove of the new year with several releases on the list, but more on those as they come along. In the mean time, how about a snippet from my latest release, Sunrise for Three? Have you met Marc, Mia, and Colt? If not, I’ve been told they are a steamy trio to get held up in Mexico with, but you be the judge. 😉 Do you think two Former Recon Marines and a fearless sexy Latina stand a chance with love while fighting against a ruthless cartel leader? You’ll have to read their story to discover if they get a sexy Sunrise for Three!

EXCERPT from Sunrise for Three

The gauzy white fluff of the curtain blew into her face, followed by a gust of wind from outside scented with the salty brine of the ocean. The curtain whipped back and forth in the strong wind then returned to lie against the window. Something red caught her attention, and she tried to lift her hand to finger the strange bright red substance, but her arm wouldn’t budge.

Heat blossomed out from her right shoulder and it dropped her to one knee. Air lodged in her lungs and her heart beat erratically. ¿Que diablos?Sunrise For Three200x300

Her vision blurred from a shroud of cold that settled over her. Like every ounce of her blood had drained, leaving nothing but a wash of cold tingles behind.

It all happened so quickly, her mind unable to make sense of anything. Male voices called to her, but she couldn’t reach them. Someone was moving her, pulling her deeper into the living room. She worked her legs, but she couldn’t get solid footing beneath her. Her body a paralyzed dead weight.

Pain swiftly replaced the burst of initial cold.

More bullets pelted the walls and other windows, sending the glass crashing into the unforgiving Spanish tiled flooring.

In a sudden rush, every nerve ending between her brain and shoulder came alive with bolts of electricity that raked across her chest and arm in waves of blinding pain. Warm liquid wet her T-shirt and the only thought that came to mind was it wasn’t her T-shirt. She had borrowed it.

Marc pulled her behind the couch and leaned her against the baseboard. “Let me see how bad.” He shoved his sidearm into the waistband of his jeans, then gently peeled back the collar of her shirt. She grimaced. “¡Hijole…wow!”

“Don’t move, darling. I’ve got you.”

His voice anchored her and helped clear the fog her mind had slipped behind to avoid the pain from the bullet that pierced her flesh. The full force of it rooted in her brain and she fought against the black veil lulling her closer. She shook her head. Her heart raced and she knew if she closed her eyes if only for a second that she would pass out. She’d be damned if she would be some damsel in distress princess.

“Did it go through? Graze her? What?” Colt kneeled beside her, holding both sides of her face. “She’s looking really damn pale, man.”

Three more rounds pinged against the cement column dividing the windows from the sliding back door just off to their left. Too close for comfort, but the men didn’t even flinch. “Look at me, sweetheart. This is going to hurt like a mother, but he has to do it.”

Ahí. Puta madre,” she gritted out a string of expletives at Marc. He slipped her arm out of the sleeve of her shirt and lifted the now bloody rag over her head and discarded it on the floor. Black dots danced in her vision. She didn’t want to pass out.

“She’s bleeding, but it’s a clean hit that split an inch gash along her shoulder. It might have nicked the bone, but I can’t see.”

It felt like something hit bone.

She bit into the flesh of her lip and tried to calm her breathing.

“We need some backup and fast, man. The fuckers have us out gunned with Ak-47s. Shots sound like they’re still coming from open water. Could be the waves messing with the sound, but—”

“You’re right. I saw them. Not them, but a boat earlier when I was standing by the window. It just didn’t click at the time.”

Marc and Colt looked at each other over the top of her head.

“Oh, darling, we are going to have a fucking serious talk about you not giving us all Intel when it happens, woman. Wait here.”
